Venice on a rainy day

It was raining most of our first full day in Venice. We spent the morning catching up with Cheryl and Giulio, but around 3:00 the rain started to let up. Giulio had errands to run, but Cheryl, Betty and I decided to head out to get some exercise and see some of Venice.

The Bridge of Sighs spans the distance between the Doge’s Palace and the prison. Obviously those who were forced to pass over the bridge were unhappy with their situation. I suspect that the relatives of the prisoners who watched their loved ones pass over the Bridge of Sighs from the vantage point from which this photo was taken spent more time sighing than the prisoners.

Our first day on Venice was also our wedding anniversary. We celebrated at Al Ponte Storto (The Crooked Bridge). We were joined by Renata, one of Giulio’s childhood friends. The restaurant also had a unique “spoondalier” hanging over our table.
