The view of Venetian life and commerce afforded by our stay with Cheryl and Giulio was fascinating. The canals are by far the quickest way to get from point to point. The canal landing outside of the apartment is an important offloading point for passengers, wholesale suppliers, building contractors, and even Emergency Medical Teams. The boatmen are incredibly skilled at maneuvering their cargo boats into the small docking slip.
The crews unload their cargo onto large hand-trucks to wend their way through the narrow alleyways to delivery points in the interior sections of the city. Sometimes two boats will dock side-by-side with the crew of the outermost boat stepping over the dockside boat to unload his cargo. It all seems very efficient.
The landing is also used to pick up garbage and materials for recycling.
