Burano, the vibrant Venetian island

The Vaporetto system of water buses provides Venetians with public transportation along Grand Canal and to the outlying islands. Our trip to Burano, on the last day of our Venice visit, took about 30 minutes via Vaporetto.

Burano is beautiful. It has existed as a fishing village for thousands of years. To guide the local fishermen home, the houses were brightly painted. This colorful tradition persists to this date. The result is stunning. Especially in the light of late afternoon.

Maybe the locals adopted the color scheme from the fruit stands.

Burano is also known for weaving and lace. The skills necessary to mend the fishermen’s nets were readily transferable to skills required to weave and to create intricate lace goods. Betty bought a tablecloth in Burano to grace our dining table when we serve Italian cuisine at home.

During our visit we often encountered other tourists deep in their selfies. Burn was a special favorite.
