Day 32 – Hey, Baby!

Friday morning we were laying in bed listening to NPR. Betty’s phone trills to announce that she’s received a text message. “Hey, Baby, I’m on my way. About 30 minutes out.” It is from Keith, the painter. A little familiar we think! 10 seconds later another text. “I’m sorry. I meant Betty, not Baby.

Sure enough he arrived about 8:00. Betty greeted him with, “Hey, Baby, is that you?”

But even though he finally managed to show up before his usual 10:00 arrival, a full workday was not in the cards. He packed up and left shortly after noon.

He left us with a treacherous staircase to negotiate through the weekend – his drop cloth spread over the stairs and the hand rail off of the wall. We thought about pulling the drop cloth away, but given the precious few hours that he is here each day that would only delay the completion of the paint job as he repositioned the drop cloth each day.

The ceilings that were “scheduled” to be done by Wednesday may not be done yet. When he left, he said that they might need another coat on Monday. None of the walls have been painted yet even though the paint that we were told to have available on Monday (Day 28) sits in the living room waiting.

I’m always amazed and confounded at how this industry works.
