Remember the title of this blog? Renovation is NOT for sissies! Today we learned the prescience of that title.
Keith arrived about 9:00 to continue painting. No sign of Jason despite yesterday’s email. Schneider Stone, the countertop contractor, arrived with their one ton load of quartz at 11:30. A quick conversation revealed that no one from The Bath Shop had been in touch with them about installation options in light of the need to later replace the damaged cabinet. Their quick visual inspection also revealed a more immediate problem. The installation screws for the cabinets were not fully seated. Countertop installation requires that they be flush with the top surface. No one from The Bath Shop was available to explain why the screws had not been fully seated. Not knowing why the screws had not been fully seated the stone contractor was unwilling to take responsibility for messing with the cabinet guy’s installation decision.
I got on the phone to Jason. No answer. Switched to Diana. She told me that Jason’s son now has the flu and is in the hospital. A single father, Jason, was appropriately with his son at the hospital. The Bath Shop had no back up plan for out of commission employees. Diana said that she’d get in touch with Jason to see what needed to be done.
In the meantime, we texted the above picture to both Diana and Jason so that they understood the problem. About 30 minutes later Jason called and talked with the stone contractor. At his direction, they removed the screws and installed the countertops leaving the section over the damaged cabinet unsealed. Not a good solution, but the only available option according to Jason and Diana. This means that a couple of the cabinets are no longer attached to each other nor are they sealed to the countertop.
By 3:00 o’clock, the countertops were fully installed. Jason arrived at 3:15 to inspect. His son will be kept in the hospital overnight for observation. He gave me an update on his plan to finish the renovation.
- Day 37 – The chair rail will be installed and painting will continue with both Keith and Gaston
- Day 38 – Jason himself will start the tile work in the kitchen
- Day 42 – The electrician will return to light us up again
- Day 43 – The plumber will return to install the garbage disposal and faucet
- Day 45 – The appliances will be set
- And somewhere in all of this when the painting is done, the closet reconstruction will be started and done.
- The long view
- Wrap around countertop
- Close up
- A little bit of color
- Corner detail
- Newest hallway hazard. Try negotiating this in the dark.

Sooooo………not looking forward to our kitchen reno in a few years. 🙁
They say it’s like knee surgery. First the dread, then the pain and then “Thank God, I did it!” Or so they say . . .
